No BS Goal Setting Tips for the New Years

So fam. We’ve reached the end of 2015 (well almost…this is my last blog of the year). Most of the holiday chaos has subsided and now you have time to breathe ( deep breath in, deep breath out) and reflect on the things that happened this year. And you know where that train of thought leads to! That’s right, it’s goal setting time!

Now, me personally, I hate to use the term “New Years Resolution”. I feel like it sets people up for failure. However, that’s not going to prevent me from achieving my goals, and it shouldn’t for you either. The easiest scapegoat excuse for not achieving anything is laziness and procrastination. And yes, that plays a part of it, but we’re going to focus on PRACTICALITY.

A few years ago, life served me the 100% trillness when I tried to evaluate why I wasn’t reaching my goals. It’s hard to strive for something you really want if you don’t see it as attainable or possible. So, what you gotta do is demystify your stuff. Break a bih down to size – your dreams should challenge you not bully you. Whether you’re goal setting for yourself, your chapter or your entire organization, here are 7 To The Point Practical Ways to get your goals off the ground and  your dreams in your hands.

  • Work Backwards: One of great way to demystify your stuff is to work your goals BACKWARDS! I do this with vision boards. I imagine where I want to be and how I want to see myself at the end of the year. I think it’s fair to say, that’s how most of us envision ourselves when we write our NYRs. But that’s just the first part. After you identify WHO you want to be:
  •  Work backwards to determine and identify where you want be, who you want to be in contact with, and how you’re planning to get to that point. Jot down the steps you need in order to get there. Write down questions you have along the way if you’re unsure of what you might need to accomplish that goal.
  • Don’t forget to take your time frame into consideration. Think in semesters. Chunking things into 9 week intervals can help you evaluate your progress and/or regression along the way. It will allow you see your end goal as plausible.
  • Less is More: For some reason, many of us believe we need to set 15-20 different goals for the upcoming year. I don’t know came up with that idea, but I’m sending him/her an extreme side eye. In my experience, it’s best to stick to the K.I.S.S Method (Keep It Simple “Silly”). Having too many things on your plate can intimidate and deter you from actually achieving your goals because everything is so overwhelming. Instead,
  • Narrow your 15-20 goals in 3-4 general goal themes. More likely than not, you’ll find a trend in the things you listed. Consolidate your thoughts to make them manageable.
  • Under each general goal, write three specific sub goals that will help you achieve your general goal. These will serve as your plan of action outlines.
  • Don’t make your goals wordy or complicated. Keep it clear, precise and to the point. Don’t beat around the bush with yourself. Your vision needs to be clear so you can know how to get there.
  • Use Action Words: Shoulda, coulda, wouldas never got nobody nowhere. Rather than using, I want to or I would like to, use the phrase “I WILL” followed by action words. Action words place you in a mental mindset where you can actually see the end result. Implement words like : I will _________. It’s mind over matter people. If you can visualize yourself doing the act, then it’s easier for you to start stepping in that direction.
  • Put a Ring On It: Long standing untouched goals are like prolonged engagements. One partner says they’re ready to make the the jump, but the lack of commitment starts making the other person wonder if this is ever going to happen, and if they’re really that important to that person. Commit to commit. Set deadlines for your goals. Solicit accountability partners who aint about the bs. Have periodic check ins with yourself and your accountability partner. Send alarms and calendar reminders to yourself in order to stay on track. If you’re not committed, quit it.
  • Don’t Be No Fool: Speaking of the perfect segue, if you’re not satisfied with your previous goals or approaches, switch it up. Mama didn’t raise no fool, right? So, act like it. Identify those old prolonged goals (and habits) and ask why you didn’t finish. Why did you set that goal? Was it for you or because someone else thought it’d be a good idea? What purpose did it serve? Is it still relevant to your life? Do you even care if you complete it or not? What happens if you don’t finish it? Will you die? Will it elevate you? Make each of your goals intentional and personal. After you evaluate your goals and deem them necessary:
  • Ask yourself if you can re-purpose the approach. Don’t attempt the same goal with the same plan. Clearly it didn’t work before. Why would it work now?
  • If your goal doesn’t have a rhyme or reason, let-it-go! Make room for an objective that will serve as a catalyst to your ambitions and ignite your fire.
  • Think Bigger: Sometimes when we connect our purpose to something bigger, it motivates us to get ish done. When we’re functioning in our own self-serving bubble, when we fall short, it’s easy for us to change things up without anyone knowing or caring. But when your actions align with a higher calling, we’re more hesitant to back out on our commitment.
  • Think about how your goals will affect your family, your squad, your community, your organization. How will your achievements bring value you to someone else? If you complete it within a certain time, how will this impact the success of someone/something else?
  • Think about how achieving your goals will enhance your personal story. YOU are in charge of creating the narrative you want people to tell. What they say about you will be determined by your action or inaction. If you want to be known as someone who got stuff done, then get stuff done. If you want to influence the world in a specific way, find a way to do it in your unique way. No one is stopping you, BUT YOU!
  • Remember You’re Human: Bruh. We’re all human. We make mistakes. We fall short. We fail. We slack. We’re not infallible. It’s a part of life you know. But also take note that we have the opportunity and the ability to change the things that don’t coincide with the dream version of ourselves. Leave some flex room for your goals. Keep some mental room open for different execution plans. Be open to advice and assistance. And most importantly, be true to yourself. You only have one life to live. Take this time to LIVE IT. Living requires you to act. You never know what you’re capable of if you don’t take the first step. The first step is always the hardest. But just know, we’re here for you, we believe in you and you’re about to take this world by storm. You got it fam!
