Study Habits to Raise Your Chapter’s GPA: Part 2

Welcome back to DPTaughtMe Study Hall! If this is your second time with us for Study Habits, that means you want that GPA lookin nice for you and your Greek organization. We’re proud of you!  And if this is your first time seeing this, make sure you check out Part One of this installment. We have some good advice about being “Basic” and establishing your ideal Study Squad.

And we’re not done. We have a few more ideas to help you nail that midterm and/or final for this semester! So let’s hop right into it!

You Can Be My Study, Study Buddy Fa Shoooooo: There are several different ways in which you can study your material. Here are a few surefire things that helped me embed information in my brain during testing season.

  • Flash Cards: Make flash cards for the class you have the most trouble with. You’re going to need as much study time as possible, so why not fit it into your walk to class, the gym, or leisure time at the student quad? It’s like a to-go study session. The more time you make to master the concepts of your hardest class, the easier the answers will come to you. Flashcards can help you recall the right answers on your test at a faster pace. That will leave more time for you to review your responses before you turn in your test.
  • Post-it Notes: In school, I used the Being Mary Jane approach to study. I’m just talking about the Post-it Notes people, calm down. Anyway, the Post-it Notes serve the same purpose as the Flashcards. Stick notes around your bathroom mirror , your dressing mirror, on your kitchen cabinet or fridge, shoot anywhere with a smooth surface! They can prompt you to quiz yourself at random times of the day. Use your notes like pop up quizzes. Have 2 sticky notes per concept, one with the question or term the top and the answer on bottom. This way, you give yourself the chance to answer correctly before seeing the results. Also, don’t be afraid to switch it up a bit. Don’t leave the sticky notes in the same place all the time. This will help keep you on your toes and lessen the chances of you getting bored with the topics.
  • Karaoke Time: One of the things that helped me the most when I studied was turning things into songs. I naturally do it with pretty much everything…and I mean everything. So, it was just natural to turn my study sessions into a full out solo karaoke session. When you can, look up some of your favorite instrumentals on Youtube and download it. Then record over the songs with the lyrics you made up from your study sessions. Download the songs to your phone or mp3 player and recite them while you’re walking around, working out, or eating lunch. Shoot, if you make enough songs for a mixtape, bring it to your group study session and share it with others. Yall see what School House Rock did for America. I bet yall still know the Conjunction Junction, I’m Just A Bill, AND the Preamble songs. Don’t act like this isn’t a good idea. There’s studies on this stuff. I’m just saying. It works.
  • Go-to Playlist: Speaking of music, make sure you have an awesome go-to playlist to listen to during your studies. I had a set playlist JUST for studying for test. It was called my Club Willis mix. No, I wasn’t clubbin instead of studying. Our main library is named Willis. The first floor was always loud and rowdy like a club, therefore we deemed it Club Willis. Ironic, I know. Anywho…listening to this playlist specifically for midterms and finals always reminded me that it was time to get to work. It energized and relaxed me at the same time.  Listening to the same playlist can trigger your brain to switch gears and buckle down when it’s time to study.

Who’s Your Connect? In the world of networking, people always use the phrase, ‘It’s not what you know, but who you know.” The same thing goes when it’s test taking season. And no, I don’t mean find someone you can cheat off of or give you an advanced version of the test. Yall aren’t going to blame me for misconduct. However, these are some people you might want to rub elbows with before the test:

  • Get to know Tutors and TAS: Tutors and TAs can be your best friends. Getting to know them early on in the semester can really give you some leverage. They’ll be more willing to work with you. They may prioritize your schedule above other things. Plus, they know the professor better than you do. They’ll have inside information about how the professor formats tests, how they think, what answer he/she is looking for and more. Even moreso, they’ll be able to genuinely help you understand concepts. None of my tutors GAVE me the answers. I had to work for them. This turned out in my favor when it was time to take my test. I was able to utilize my critical thinking skills and eliminate wrong answers faster because I was able to think my way through questions.
  • Find someone who has old exams from the same professor: Tutors/ TAs might also be helpful for offering you old exams or tests the professor might have. If not the Tutors or TAs, look for a friend or upper classman who might have them lying around. Reviewing old material can be extremely helpful when studying for a test. Most of the times there are slight revisions to your test, but not so much that everything is thrown completely off. The more you are familiar with the subject, and the more aware you are of the format, the better hope you have of aceing your test. Also, note that it says SAME professor. This is imperative. If you get notes/tests from a professor who does not have the same style or cover the same concepts as the one you’re taking, you can be royaly screwed. Be careful!

Treat Yo’Self!

  • Study Breaks: Make sure you make time to breathe! Yes, school is important, but your education isn’t useful if you stress yourself into the grave. From time to time, step away from the study area. Go for a brief walk. Run a quick errand. Talk to someone for 15 minutes. Then come back to what you were doing. Breaks give your brain time to relax, recooperate, alliviates stress and increases your attention span. If you miss out on breaks, you’re pretty much running on E and that can’t be good. Take care of your studying, take care of you, and let God do the rest.
  • Comfort Food: After I finished studying a certain segment that I felt really confident about, I would reward myself with a treat. Snacks are a good motivation for this. Eating snacks during your study hall can make you lathargic and serve as a distraction (especially when people keep asking can they have some.) Rationing out your snacks into study breaks will give you something to look forward to. It’s a concrete indication that you have completed a segment successfully and you feel confident enough in the subject matter to move along to the next thing. It’s all about progress people.
